School Of Basic Studies


Background
The School of Basic Studies is a one (1) year intensive advanced level training programme leading to the award of the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination Certificate (IJMB). The IJMB programme is a replacement for the former Higher School Certificate (HSC) offered in Nigeria and it is equivalent to the Cambridge University and the University of London A’ Level GCE. IJMB is one of the three (3) recognized and approved qualifications listed in the JAMB brochure for 200 levels Direct Entry admission into Nigerian Universities. The programme is co-ordinated by the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and has been running since 1970. Over 50 institutions are affiliated to the IJMB programme including:

Federal University of Technology, Akure,
Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,
Caleb University, Lagos,
Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Port Harcourt,
Akwa-Ibom College of Arts and Science, Ikono, and
Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science, Yenagoa
And so many others .

Rhema University is the first institution to establish the programme in the entire South-East geo-political zone. IJMB examination is conducted in the first quarter of every year and the result released in the second quarter of same year for successful students to use to seek 200 levels direct entry admission into any university of their choice in their preferred course of study (Medicine, Law, Engineering, computer science, Mass communication, Accounting, Biochemistry, etc.). Students are to write examination in three subject combination which is related to their chosen course of study in the university.

Examples of subject combinations are:
I. Biology/Chemistry/Physics leading to courses in Medical, Health, Biological Sciences etc
II. Mathematics/Chemistry/Physics leading to courses in Physical Sciences, Engineering etc
III. Government/Mathematics/ Economics leading to courses in Management, Social Sciences etc
IV. Government/Christian Religious Studies/ Literature in English leading to courses in Arts, Law etc
V. And so many other subject combinations

If a student registered for the subject combination Mathematics/Chemistry/Physics and his/her result is as follows:

Total grade points =12points + 1 bonus point ie 13points (a bonus point is awarded to every student who didn’t fail any of his/her subjects ie no “F grade”). The student in this example can now purchase JAMB direct entry form and seek direct entry admission with his/her IJMB result (13points) in his/her preferred course of study into any Nigerian university.

Entry Qualifications:
Candidates who possess five (5) O’ level credit passes at WAEC, NECO or NABTEB at a single sitting in subjects relevant to their field of study are eligible to apply. Candidates who have deficiency in English Language or Mathematics will be allowed to take the subjects at O’ level while in the School. Subjects offered at the school cut across Arts, Science, Social Sciences and Management Sciences.
Duration of the Programme
The duration of the programme is twelve (12) calendar months. Candidates who obtain good grades will be eligible for 200 levels Direct Entry Admission into any University of their choice.
Mode of application
Admission forms can be obtained directly from the Admissions Office, Office of the Registrar, Rhema University on presentation of evidence of payment of 5,100.00 naira (five thousand, one hundred naira) only into the under listed Bank accounts of the University:

Residency
Residential Accommodation will be provided for all the students of the school. Full cafeteria services are operated in the University. All the students of the university including IJMB students are required to take their meals on the basis of pay-as-you-eat.
Fees Charged
The School charges a moderate fee of 200,000.00 naira which covers tuition, accommodation, library, laboratory services, ICT facilities, Student Information hand book, and caution deposit but does not cover feeding and IJMB examination registration charges.
