The programme of Political Science and Public Administration is designed to provide quality education and training leading to the award of B.Sc. Degree in Political Science and Public Administration. Considering the societal demands and needs, training offered by the Department is such that would equip the students with theoretical and practical knowledge to enable them have self-confidence and capacity to be able to cope and withstand the challenges of the modern complex society. Essentially, the curriculum is designed and structured to reflect the inter-disciplinary concept of Political Science. The programme provides an interdisciplinary global studies curriculum with strong component of cultural understanding, leadership, and communication competences.


Objectives:

Against the backdrop of the philosophy of the University, the B.Sc.. Degree in Political Science and Public Administration aims at the following:

  • Preparing students for diverse range and interesting career paths in the public, non-governmental organizations, profit and private organizations such as the core civil service, parastatals, local governments, military and para-military establishments, foreign service, commercial and industrial establishments, teaching and research institutes as well as rendering service to God;
  • Preparing individuals for the exercise of competent and effective leadership in whatsoever field they may find themselves after graduation;
  • Providing a strong academic background for research and post graduate studies.
  • Sharpening the skills of students in the methodology of research in the social sciences that can be applied in solving societal problems;
  • Preparing students for the acquisition of necessary knowledge that would help them as informed citizens in the analysis and evaluation of political development from both observational and theoretical standpoints;
  • Providing students with the skill-base from which they can proceed to higher studies in Political Science;
  • Developing in students the ability to apply the knowledge gained to the resolution of societal problems and conflicts;
  • Inculcating in students a deep appreciation of the political dynamics of society and the impact of this on socio-economic development and societal well-being;
  • Providing the students with necessary skills for studying and analyzing society; and
  • Developing in students, such skills and competency that would allow them to be self-reliant.

Admission Requirements:

In addition to the general university requirements, the following regulations shall apply to the admission of students into Political Science and Public Administration.

UTME (4-year Full-Time programme)

Candidates are expected to have obtained at least five “O” level WASC/SSCE, GCE or NECO Credit passes in not more than two sittings in English Language, Mathematics, Government or History and any other two relevant subjects.

Candidates are expected to sit for English language, Government or History and any other two subjects at the UTME, and the post UTME screening test from the University and meet acceptable score/pass.

Direct Entry Admission (3-year Full time programme)

In addition to requirements stated in (a) above, candidates must have passed at least Government or History and any other subject in the GCE “A” level or HSC Examinations or at least a merit at N.C.E. in two teaching subjects including Government/Political Science, OND or equivalent, Diploma in Public Administration, Local Government Law, Public and Industrial Relations, Transport Management, General Management or other related disciplines (as may be approved from time to time by the University Senate) from a recognized/approved institution with grade not lower than the equivalence of lower credit.

Graduation Requirements:

To graduate, a student must have:

Completed and passed the following number of units at each level

  • 100 – 36
  • 200 – 37
  • 300 – 37
  • 400 – 36

Total 146 including all compulsory courses specified by the University/Department.

Completed and met the standard for all required and optional courses.

Obtain a minimum (GPA of 1.5) and

Meet other requirements that may be prescribed by the department, Faculty and

Senate.

Graduation Requirements:

The graduation requirement is that every four-year programme has a maximum of six (6) years for graduation. If a student is unable to graduate at the end of the maximum duration, such a student should consider his/her studentship to have lapsed and will be asked to withdraw from the University unless there is evidence of Senate approval for the student to re-continue his/her studies. For any student to graduate, he/she must have obtained a minimum of 120 or a maximum of 192 credit units for a four- year programme. Students must have passed all core courses and all GST Courses before they can graduate.
