The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Accounting is alternate degree programmes offered by the Department of Management Sciences. The degrees are acquired through Course Work and Research Project. The major emphasis for the Accounting option is Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Management Accounting, Public Sector Accounting, Accounting Seminar, Accounting Ethics & Value, Forensic Accounting, Auditing and Taxation.

B.Sc. DEGREE PROGRAMME IN ACCOUNTING

Introduction

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Accounting is alternate degree programmes offered by the Department of Management Sciences. The degrees are acquired through Course Work and Research Project. The major emphasis for the Accounting option is Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Management Accounting, Public Sector Accounting, Accounting Seminar, Accounting Ethics & Value, Forensic Accounting, Auditing and Taxation.

The Philosophy and Objectives of the Accounting Option

The Primary focus of the Accounting program is to produce high quality personnel in the field of Accounting. The program will lead to the enhancing of accounting knowledge and practice in the global market as well as contribute meaningfully to development of Nigeria.

Our accounting program will seek to produce highly skilled accounting personnel, well grounded in accounting, business and computer, as well as equipped with sufficient inter-personal skills to enable them operate effectively in the global market place.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the programme include:

  1. To enhance national development through application of Accounting knowledge impacted on the students
  2. To foster team spirit in the student so that he/she can participate effectively in an organizational work setting;
  3. To promote ethical standards, attitude and skills that is consistent with professionalism in accounting.
  4. To engage in the continuing search to expand the scope and application of accounting tools and techniques required to promote and enhance national economic and social development. In this regard, the program seeks to stimulate interest as well as provide the needed leadership in accounting research and practice.
  5. To produce accounting graduates well grounded in diverse management, social and interpersonal skills to be able to operate effectively with other professionals in the market place. In this regard, we expect our graduates to be reasonably grounded in economic, finance, entrepreneurship, and information technology as well as management in addition to the accounting field of specialization.
  6. The program seeks to inculcate into its graduate requisite training in attitudes, ethics and professionalism. The program will therefore emphasize issues of ethics and values in its curriculum.

Admission Requirements for the Four (4) Year Full-Time Degree Programme

A: Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess the following qualifications:

At least Five “O” level Credit passes in WAEC, WASC, SSCE/GCE, NECO, SSCE, or their recognized equivalents at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics and Economics.

Note:    The candidate must also pass the UTME at an acceptable score in addition to the Post UTME exams. The compulsory subjects for the University matriculation Examinations (UTME) are:

  • Use of English
  • Mathematics
  • Economics
  • Any other relevant subject

Admission Requirement for the Three (3) Year Full-Time Degree Programme

In addition to “A” above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:

  • Two Advanced level passes (G.C.E, A/L or H.S.C) or any of their recognized equivalents at not more than one sitting. One of the two subjects should be Accounting and any other of either Economics or Business Management
  • A possession of a National Diploma in Accounting from any recognized Institution.
  • HND with a lower Credit in Accounting, Financial Studies, NCE with a credit pass in Accounting or Business Studies from a recognized institution.
  • A complete pass in the Foundation Examination or a possession of the final certificate of Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Admission Requirement for the Two (2) Year Full-Time Degree Programme

In addition to ‘A’ above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the Department’s two years programme in Accounting

  • HND with at least a minimum of Upper credit level pass in Accounting from a recognized institution.
  • A complete pass in all the Professional Examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) or any other recognized professional Accountancy body.

Graduation Requirements

The graduation requirement is that every four-year programme has a maximum of six (6) years for graduation.  If a student is unable to graduate at the end of the maximum duration, such a student should consider his/her studentship to have lapsed and will be asked to withdraw from the University unless there is evidence of Senate approval for the student to re-continue his/her studies.  For any student to graduate, he/she must have obtained a minimum of 120 or a maximum of 192 credit units for a four- year programme.  Students must have passed all core courses and all GST Courses before they can graduate.
